Arguably the most important university awards and ratings are those which are based on what the students themselves think. Over at WhatUni.com, past and current students regularly contribute to the site in the form of university reviews, plus ratings which use a 5-star system. This goes on all year round so is a vast and extremely comprehensive source of data and opinion. Every year WhatUni collates all the information submitted and works out which universities have the highest overall score in each of 10 categories. The resulting annual Student Choice Awards are, as WhatUni say, “sort of like the Oscars, but a bit more glamorous”! The 2015 award ceremony took place last week and the awards were presented by TV’s Hugh Dennis.
So what was the outcome? Below we show the top ten winners in the ‘Overall Experience’ category and indicate how the same ten fared in several other categories. The overall ‘University of the Year‘ Award went to Loughborough University, with Harper Adams University coming a very close second.
A university not in the overall top ten won first place for Job Prospects (perhaps the most important category of all), being the University of Nottingham. Other categories not shown above were: Student Union, Accommodation, City Life, Clubs & Societies, and International. See the full results for all ten categories here.
Other key takeaways from the full results, and comparisons to previous years, are interesting:
- Student satisfaction is growing year on year;
- The only category seeing a fall in satisfaction this year is Accommodation;
- Universities with an above average number of International students fared better in most of the ten categories;
- Students are now beginning to be more optimistic about future job prospects.
